PART I – AN OVERVIEW OF COMPREHENSIVE DEPARTMENT REVIEWS (USING CAS)

Standards

The Council for the Advancement in Higher Education (CAS) standards will be used as a default framework. National program standards will be used in addition to CAS standards if they are in place, such as ACUHO-I Standards for Housing, NIRSA for Rec Sports, and NACE for Career Services. For functional areas that don’t have national standards, the Student Affairs Office of Assessment and Research (SAAR) will work with the area to develop review criteria based on CAS Standards.

CAS standards are written as a collaboration with professional associations related to the following functional areas:

  • Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Programs
  • Assessment Services
  • Campus Activities Programs
  • Career Services
  • College Unions
  • Commuter and Off-Campus Living Programs
  • Conference and Event Programs
  • Counseling Services
  • Disability Resources and Services
  • Fraternity and Sorority Advising Programs
  • Health Promotion Services
  • Housing and Residential Life Programs
  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Programs and Services
  • Multicultural Student Programs and Services
  • Recreational Sports Programs
  • Orientation Programs
  • Parent and Family Programs
  • Student Conduct Programs
  • Student Leadership Programs

All CAS Standards include the following sections:

  • Mission
  • Program
  • Organization and Leadership
  • Human Resources
  • Ethics
  • Law, Policy, and Governance
  • Diversity, Equity, and Access
  • Internal and External Relations
  • Financial Resources
  • Technology
  • Facilities and Equipment
  • Assessment

Review Cycle

Between three and five areas will be reviewed per year on a regular cycle.  Each area in the Division will be reviewed every five years.  The schedule below outlines the areas and their review period.  The review process timeline will be modified in consideration of the new organizational structure and any extenuating circumstances in each area.

Timeline

  • May-June, meet with area directors to discuss and develop review criterion.
  • June-July, designate self-assessment team members as well as alternates
  • July-August, orientation and training for self-assessment by SAAR Staff
  • July, develop a comprehensive review plan for the three areas.
  • August-December, self-assessment
  • Jan-March, external review
  • April-May, action plan
