Assessment Terms and Concepts

Administrative Outcomes – specific, measurable statements describing the desired end-result and quality (e.g., timeliness, accuracy, responsiveness, frequency, etc.) of the key functions and services of the administrative unit. (“Define student learning outcomes,” 2020)

Assessment – collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and disseminating data applied for accountability and program and learning improvement. (Henning and Roberts, 2016, p. 38)

Assessment agenda – an organization’s comprehensive plan for assessment priorities within a given time period. (Defined by SAAR team)

Assessment methods – The measures used to collect data to determine whether a program has met its goals and outcomes and/or a student has learned. (Henning and Roberts, 2016, p.38)

Evaluation – Using data to make judgments regarding programs or services. (Henning and Roberts, 2016, p.38)

Goals – The end results of an activity, a program, or a service written in broad terms. (Henning and Roberts, 2016, p.38)

Learning Outcomes – What students know or can do at the end of an experience. (Henning and Roberts, 2016, p.38)

Methodology – A specific set of procedures or techniques used to identify, select, process, and analyze information. (“Research support: Research methodology,” 2020)

Mission – The purpose of an organization. (Henning and Roberts, 2016, p.38)

Objectives – Specific accomplishments attained to meet a goal – also called operational outcomes or administrative outcomes. (Henning and Roberts, 2016, p.38)

Program Outcomes – What the program is expected to provide. (Henning and Roberts, 2016, p.38)

Program Review – A rigorous, systematic, objective, impartial, expert-based examination, evaluation and self-evaluation of how effectively a program is working, as part of the ongoing pursuit of higher levels of achievement and quality in the university, and in the service of program improvement. Research – Collecting data for the purpose of testing a theory to produce generalizable knowledge. (Henning and Roberts, 2016, p.38)

Strategic Plan – A long-term plan that designates what a unit will accomplish. (Henning and Roberts, 2016, p.38)

Vision – An inspirational statement regarding the ideal success of an organization. (Henning and Roberts, 2016, p.38)

Values – Foundational beliefs that guide an organization. (Henning and Roberts, 2016, p.38)
