< Back To Team Background Mercy joined UF’s Student Affairs Office of Assessment and Research (SAAR) as a Graduate Research Assistant in 2020. She is a doctoral candidate in the Counseling and Counselor Education program currently working on her dissertation, which elicits the counter-narratives of Latinx-identifying counselor educators and uncovers how they contend with their personal and professional identities. Mercy received her Bachelors in Journalism and Psychology and her Masters and Specialist degrees in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Florida. In addition, she is also a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and has worked with children, adults, couples and families in various settings such as treatment centers, schools, after-school care programs, and community agencies. She utilizes an evidenced-based and human-centered approach to help her clients work through difficult experiences, connect with themselves and others, heal from trauma and enhance their overall wellness. Mercy is passionate about education, social justice, anti-racism and supporting clients and students most deeply impacted by systemic inequities. She believes that data and research can help to tell powerful stories and be used as an advocacy tool. Mercy has been involved in various research projects exploring mental health and counselor education issues, such as mindfulness practices as a way to mitigate anxiety and increase empathy among counselors-in-training. Mercy’s favorite self-care activities include: celebrating life with family and friends, playing superhero games with her three brilliant nephews, baby pool dates with her niece, strength training, reading non-academic books, and drinking lots of Cuban coffee.
